They would give me an African name, Barack, or “blessed,” believing that in a tolerant America your name is no barrier to success. They know those things. But we shouldn’t use our humility as an excuse for inaction. And now is the time to keep the promise of equal pay for an equal day’s work, because I want my daughters to have exactly the same opportunities as your sons. The question is whether we spend that time focused on what pushes us apart, or whether we commit ourselves to an effort – a sustained effort – to find common ground, to focus on the future we seek for our children, and to respect the dignity of all human beings.
John Kerry understands the ideals of community, faith, and service because they’ve defined his life. John Kerry believes in America. This belief comes from my unyielding faith in the decency and generosity of the American people. So let there be no doubt: the situation for the Palestinian people is intolerable. And just as it devastates Palestinian families, the continuing humanitarian crisis in Gaza does not serve Israel’s security; neither does the continuing lack of opportunity in the West Bank. Finally, I want to discuss economic development and opportunity.
